Natural gas usage in electricity generation is affected by seasonal factors, changes in economic activity, and the relative cost of electricity generated from natural gas compared to coal, oil, nuclear, hydropower, and renewables, taking availability into consideration. Some dual-fueled electricity generating plants can easily switch between natural gas and fuel oil depending on their relative costs. When oil prices are $100 per barrel, these plants are running on natural gas. With oil prices cut in half, the economics become more favorable for fuel oil.
